Ten tips for the trail

Start at the sea
Perform Shiogori at Ogigahama Beach, a short walk from Kii-Tanabe Station. No need to swim: dipping your hands in the waves is enough. Learn more →

Book your inns first
Mountain villages have few places to stay, and luggage transfer only works once your next inn is fixed. Secure your accommodation as soon as your dates are set.

Your daypack
Water, snacks, rain gear, a warm layer, cash, phone and charger, personal medicine, a map with your inn’s address, and spare socks.

Expect rain
The Kii Peninsula is one of the rainiest regions in Japan. Carry rain gear even on sunny days and keep your things in a waterproof liner. Wet stone steps and roots are slippery.

Carry cash
Small shops, inns and buses in mountain villages may accept cash only. Get cash in Tanabe before you set off.

Water and food
Some stages have no restaurants on the way (e.g. Chikatsuyu to Hongu). Pack lunch and water in the morning.

Check bus times
Buses are infrequent. Check the times for the start and end of your walk in advance.

Start early
Long stages take 9–12 hours, and it gets dark early in the mountains. Set off early and reach your inn in daylight.

Respect the sacred path
Be quiet at oji and shrines, stay on the trail and take all rubbish with you. Leave this thousand-year-old path as you found it.

In an emergency
Call 119 (ambulance/fire) or 110 (police). Quoting the number on the nearest trail marker helps rescuers find you. For luggage problems, contact SHIOGORI TRANSPORTE.
